About Mission Southside

It is not easy to be poor, hungry, under-dressed and without a home in Johnson County, KS.  We are fortunate to have a host of dedicated agencies that work within our community to stand in that gap. Mission Southside has mobilized resources by donating goods and thousands of volunteer hours to help make a difference.
Mission Southside has a neighbor’s heart … a heart that loves Jesus Christ and one that genuinely cares about the needs of others.  Mission Southside is not a church, but partners with churches, “helps” organizations, businesses, and individuals to bring hope to Johnson County, KS through the meeting of both physical and spiritual needs.
Our hope is in Jesus Christ, our prayer is that God will be glorified, and our heart is for those in need. We would love to have you join us in that mission.

The disciples asked Jesus, "which is the greatest commandment?"  Jesus replied, "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength - and love your neighbor as yourself."  It took me awhile (50 years to be exact) to understand who my "neighbor" is, but I am fully invested now in bringing help and hope to the poor, the forgotten, the least of these (Matthew 25).
Coming to faith in Christ at age 7 allowed me to grasp what it means to love Jesus with my whole heart.  Now I can help fulfill the entire Great Commandment as we take Jesus to the people ("neighbor's") and meet urgent needs.  My wife and 4 kids (+ a daughter and son in law) are thrilled to help out with the mission any chance they get.  Olathe and SW Johnson County has been our home for over 20 years!
Spiritual Development
What a privilege to join the Lord in His work in our community! I had the joy of serving in church youth ministry for 23 years, including many unforgettable mission trip experiences, serving others in the name of Christ. Our prayer would always be, “Lord, please help us to join in your work in our own community the way we have been a part of your work here” - many times in Arlington, TX. ( www.missionarlington.org). The launch of Mission Southside in January of 2011 was an answer to our prayers!

Our family loves this wonderful community, which has been “home” to me for over 45 years. With rising hunger and poverty for all age groups – the majority of these not connected to any Christian faith community – it is a key time for an obedient response to the Lord to love and serve our neighbors in His name. It is a privilege for my wife, 2 sons and I to partner with each of you (individuals, churches, and ministries) as we 'hang out on property and hover around John 3:16'.
Business Development
Rod has been in pastoral ministry since 1983 and has been privileged to serve with initiatives such as Olathe Serve Day, Olathe Pastors Network, Citywide Prayer Movement, Olathe Community Food Pantry, the Olathe Police Department, and local church planting.

The Janzen's count it a privilege to serve the Lord as this new role will give them the opportunity to unleash their love for people and the community they have lived in for 30 years. Rod and Lynda have been married since 1983 and have two grown children, Lauren (and Eric) Eberspacher, along with granddaughter, Nora, and son, Jared.
Community Development
Amy has served with Mission Southside since its inception three years ago. She has faithfully overseen our Back Snack program, and works closely with the Olathe School District on our behalf. Amy joined our staff team in 2013 and also oversees special events. We are honored to have Amy as a part of our ministry force. Amy and Greg have three children and attend Olathe Christian Church.
Office Manager
My family and I are blessed to be a part of Mission Southside, to be the hands and feet of Jesus. I love that I get to see first hand how all these Jesus people come together to do His work. Our family has lived in Olathe for 13 years, our 2 children Noah and Grace, attend school in Olathe. It makes my heart happy when the 4 of us are used by God to spread hope and give help. It is a gift to get to serve in our own community.
Latino Coordinator
I have been serving the Latino community since my first mission trip to Croc, MX at age fifteen. I graduated from John Brown University with a degree in Spanish and Child and Family Studies and spent the year 2015 partnering and serving with missionaries in Central and South America.  I am excited to serve our Spanish speaking friends with Mission Southside and advocate for those who are often overlooked and marginalized in our community. The Lord continues to shape and grow my heart for the unique challenges facing our immigrant neighbors. Serving in this way is such a priviledge, I love every part of it from the tamales to Bible studies held in Laundry rooms.
